The best drum solos take you by the hand and guide you 'round the dance ground, never straying too far from the heartbeat. They'll lift you up high to see what the drummer feels, then pull you back to the beat before turning you in other directions - but always short views before pulling you back the the safety of the danceground heartbeat. Those that pull you away too long suck; they're just showing off their boring virtuosity.
A good solo doesn't have to be short, but it has to stay close to that beaten path made by the dancers. I think there's a halfway decent one out there on Youtube done by a young Stevie Wonder - but I might misremember.
