A group of friends were hospitalized Wednesday after they mistakenly used herbicide to fry catfish.

Bert Welch of Madison said his son Adam Welch and six others were poisoned during a gathering at a deer camp in Terry.

The seven teens whose ages range from 15 to 17, are in stable condition at University of Mississippi Medical Center.

“The person who was in charge of getting the oil picked up the wrong thing,” Welch said. “The bottle wasn’t clearly marked and it looked like one of those big bottles of peanut oil you get at Sam’s Club.”

About 30 minutes after the teens consumed the fish, one became sick followed by the others. Only after they ate the fish did they realized they weren’t cooking with oil, Welch said.
