Here We Go. . .
Last week, down in George County, an outstanding star running back for the local high school team who is black, died in an apparent suicide after a deputy sheriff (not yet identified by race) stopped him for traffic violations.
Since the story broke, rumors have flown at the speed of light and now the NAACP is involved. Apparently, the NAACP has conducted it's own "investigation" and deemed the situation suspicious and they [the NAACP] and the family don't believe the incident to be suicide. Although they haven't said it outright, it obvious that the claim of racism will rear it's ugly head at some point.
Now, if there is one thing that the NAACP does well, it's stir up the racial divide that still haunts Mississippi. However, the NAACP has been oddly quiet and absent as Jackson, our fair capital city, continues to rack up an unprecedented death toll in black on black violence. But, I guess there ain't no bucks when whitey ain't involved.
It'll be interesting to see what the facts turn out to be in this case. I have my own suspicions and everyone seems to ignore a little blurb in a Clarion Ledger article about a phone call to police made minutes before the traffic stop from the home of Billey Joe's ex-girlfriend, as he and three others went from door to window trying to get in. This, just after the girl's daddy went to work. I guess that's evidence easy to ignore in the eyes of the NAACP.
Godspeed to you Billey Joe.
And another thing. . .isn't it about time that the NAACP changed their name? You can't call black people black anymore and you certainly can't call them "colored" in this day and age of PC awareness. So, in the words of a famous rap star, "What up wit' dat?"
The reality in Jackson is far worse than some sad, but isolated, small town incident. As Jackson Police Department spokesman Lt. Travis Scott said recently about another murder, “This was an absolutely senseless killing. You’d do better trying to understand Chinese algebra than some of the homicides we’ve had in Jackson.”
I guess it comes down to this - if there is no true controversy or racial overtone to this story then that makes NAACP what they have largely become: irrelevant.
Sooo...just like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and all the other race hustlers, the NAACP will have to create a problem where none exist. It's their job. Hopefully someday they will all become unemployed
