I hate to say it, but so true!

Brett, I learned the auto repair trade in the late sixties and early seventies working on good old American cars. Ask any old time auto tech and they will probably tell you this; "I saw this coming thirty years ago".

I watched the quality of American cars decline slowly but surely over the years and I KNEW this day would come.

When I started in my first shop in 1973 we used to make fun of Japanese cars. In ten years we were making fun of American cars. The defects and shoddy workmanship were well known in the trade. With the exception of our full size and larger trucks, our products became JUNK!

I have an interesting anecdote from a buddy who once worked with me. He worked in a Chevy dealership in Long Beach and they got a car in one time with a rattle in the body. Well....after spending a few hours running down the noise they pulled one of the window panels and found a coke bottle in the window well with a note inside. The note read "I wonder how long it took you guys to find this - ha ha ha". Some smartass on the assembly line having a fun time I guess. A lousy example of the auto workers in Detroit. I seriously doubt any worker in a Japanese plant would EVER do something like that. My buddy swore it was a true story.

Anyway just some examples of how far we have declined. A once great industry now begging for corporate and government welfare because the blue suits instead of the engineers were in charge of the asylum.

I only wrote this because I work in a shop here in town that specializes in Asian cars and I see the difference. What a sad ending to a once great industry.

Addendum: My High School alma matter is playing for the L.A. City football championship today in the Los Angeles Colliseum against Narbonne High School.

Go San Pedro High School!

Sorry Toast, I just had to sneak that one in. I quit watching the Pros and College football (with the exception of the Superbowl) years ago after the Rams bolted for St. Louis but I still love Prep sports.

I love high school and college ball too. Seems more pure than the pay to play rich boys of the NFL.

As for the car quality, I think it's proportional to the attitude of the worker, which in general in the USA, is pretty freakin' poor. Just my opinion. No one takes any pride any more. Hell, maybe we need another Great Depression to slap us on our lazy asses and return the pride of America to where it once was, with the worker.

Cloudy days ahead my friend.
